Then, you can just feed them by following the instructions given. Commonly, it is only around a tablespoon of food once a day to avoid them suffering from obesity.
On the other hand, you probably cannot give them the packaged foods for some reasons. Maybe, the box is just empty and you still don’t have time to buy it. If this is what you experience, some ingredients in your kitchen are recommended. The most recommended one is coarse and dry grain like sunflower seeds and dry corn. The hamsters basically need them to avoid the teeth growing up uncontrollably. Yes, it is their way to keep their teeth short as it is healthier and more controllable for them. Aside from the dry grain, some vegetables and fruits are recommended for them in small amount including carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, celery, sweet potatoes, peach, raspberry, mango, strawberry, and cucumber.
How is about tomato?
Tomatoes contain some substances including solanum alkanoid believed to be the reasons for some health issues around neurology and digestive system. Luckily, it doesn’t give too much effect for human since human’s body system tends to be stronger compared to some kinds of animal. But it also means that tomato is not recommended for animals like hamsters for the same reasons. Hamsters have body system that is considered as more fragile even compared to any other animals. That’s why the types of food along with the way it is fed should be controlled more. It is better not to give those tomatoes and any other fruits from nightshade family to prevent them from possibility of neurologic and digestive problems.
What are other foods not to be given for hamsters?
Aside from tomatoes, there are some other foods that are not recommended for hamsters. Commonly, some of those foods have similar content with tomatoes. While some others have high content of calorie that tends to make hamsters easily suffer from diabetic diseases. So, the effects may not be seen directly but after some times of consuming. Although some experts said that these foods are okay to be given sometimes, it is still better to avoid them at all. What are the forbidden foods? They are grape seeds, almonds, peanuts, garlic, onion, eggplants, fruit pits, and apple seeds.
If you don’t to take a risk, the safest thing is indeed giving the hamsters what they must eat anyway. So, can hamsters eat tomatoes? It should not for sure.
